Movies about the life and works of artists are always popular, whether they are independent films or Hollywood blockbusters always hit the mark when it comes to viewing figures. We pick out a few of the best, so if you need ideas for a great art inspired movie, look no further!

  • Pollock – Ed Harris stars as the title character, Jackson Pollock, and the film follows his life as he struggles with infidelities and with his problems with alcohol. Ed Harris also directs this masterpiece.
  • Frida – Salma Hayek stars as the Mexican surrealist painter, Frida Kahlo. Get an insight into both Kahlo’s private and public life with this Oscar winning film.
  • Mr Turner – the superbly talented Timothy Spall plays J.M.W. Turner, and the film focuses on the life and loves of the ever popular English Romanticism artist.
  • Big Eyes – The story is based on the life and works of Margaret Keane, the creator of waif portraits easily recognisable by their big eyes. The films follows the story of how her husband was originally claiming that the art work was his, the truth only comes to light after the divorce.
  • My Left Foot – One of the best known works from the talented Daniel Day-Lewis. Lewis plays Christy Brown who suffers from cerebral palsy and creates beautiful works of art, both paintings and poems, using his left foot.
  • Lust for Life – Adapted from a novel of the same name, the story follows the life of Vincent Van Gogh, from the circumstances that led him to become a painter, throughout his height of fame, and finally his untimely death. Starring Kirk Douglas, the Oscar winning Lust for Life is a must see film for all art lovers.
